HPI 1/18 Scale Micro RS4 Radio Control Racer
This class of r/c vehicle was my first entry into the 1/18 scale arena.
It is a fun size! The 1/18 scale Micro RS4 radio control racer is the
perfect size for racing indoors and on smooth surfaces outdoors. The
single belt 4WD drivetrain and rubber tires make running on tile,
low-pile carpet and wood floors easy and fun!
The Micro RS4 packs a lot of features normally found only on larger
scale R/C cars. With precise, adjustable handling and small enough to
run in a garage or hobby shop, real racing can be set up almost
anywhere.
With the Micro RS4 kit, there is no need for specialized miniature
electronics. The Micro RS4 was designed to use standard servos,
electronic speed controls and receivers. I set mine up with a JR XS-2
radio and a Futaba speed control.
Out of the box everything is powered with standard batteries, you
decide whether you want long runtimes with AA batteries (up to 40
minutes!), or lightweight performance with AAA batteries. The battery
holder adjusts for either size battery. The hot set up is to get
rechargeable batteries and I have tried several configurations from
just adding 4 rechargeables to the stock holder to making custom 6-cell
packs. For our racing area in the gym of a church the 5-cell pack cave
the best handling and speed.
There is also an RTR version that comes with the HPI TX-2 radio. With
an AM transmitter and receiver as well as six different crystal
choices, you can race with your friends!
The RTR radio control transmitter is comfortable to hold and features a
battery strength indicater. The transmitter also has basic steering and
throttle trim dials, plus a welcome dual rate adjustment for the
steering. Dual rate lets you adjust how far the steering servo turns
the front wheels left and right. This is handy when one place you race
is carpet and one is wood!
In the RTR version the steering servo and Micro Pro Control ESC are
pre-installed in the car along with the standard size AM receiver.
Both the wheelbase and wheel track width are adjustable on the Micro
RS4 and HPI as well as others make a wide range of bodies so you can
drive just the car you want to. The wheelbase is adjustable between 2
lengths, the width of the car is adjustable (3 different widths in the
front, 4 in the rear!), plus the body mounts are adjustable front and
rear!
The entire Micro RS4 drivetrain rides on a set of ball bearings for
efficiency and speed, and both ends of the car use gear differentials
for great handling! The suspension uses scaled-down cantilever
coil-over shocks for precise steering response and tuning ability.
Steering is provided by a standard-size servo connected directly to the
steering hubs. The rear axle is supported by a single shock, which can
be tuned with springs. An impact-absorbing bumper protects the front
suspension parts from race damage.
Of course there are a wide range of option parts for the Micro RS4 from
HPI as well as numerous aftermarket manufacturers. A rear ball
differential and a front one-way differential can be used to improve
handlind on certin race courses. Soft compound tires for concrete and
wood surfaces are also available along with a bunch of aluminum chi-chi
parts. Trick out your ride and have something unique and
high-performance.
I've had several RS4s and I think it is a great car. Currently. I have a BMW M3 and a Nissan Skyline.
